STACK ANNOUNCES FREE SEMINAR FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

PHILADELPHIA, SEPT. 11, 2007 – A free seminar on transitioning into adulthood is now available for young adults with disabilities and their families, according to state Sen. Mike Stack.

The Institute on Disabilities, Pennsylvania’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at Temple University, is currently seeking applicants to attend “Competence and Confidence: Partners in Policymaking/Transition to Adulthood.”

The project is for young people with disabilities, ages 16 to 21, and their families for transitioning from high school to adulthood.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 14.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for young adults and their families to discover what the future has in store for them while meeting new people and making friends,” Stack said. “I’m pleased that the Institute on Disabilities is offering this program, and I hope families take advantage of this free seminar.”

Successful applicants will attend two-day training sessions over six weekends, starting at the end of September, at the Holiday Inn City Line in Philadelphia.

Attendees will learn about post-secondary options like education and employment, planning tools, developing an e-portfolio, housing options, becoming empowered as a citizen, exploring available resources, effective communication, conflict resolution and more.

The Institute on Disabilities covers most expenses for participants during training such as travel, lodging, meals, personal assistant services and/or childcare reimbursements.
For an application, contact Kathy Miller at 215-204-9395 or millerk@temple.edu.
