STACK: NEW AUTOMATED SYSTEM NOTIFIES VICTIMS OF INMATE’S RELEASE

PHILADELPHIA, APRIL 11, 2007: State Sen. Mike Stack is pleased that a new automated system will notify victims and others when an inmate is released or escapes from a county jail.

The Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system will allow individuals to register to receive notification when a criminal is back in society through a phone call, letter or e-mail.

The automated system benefits victims, as well as their families, neighbors and even police departments.

“This new system is extremely important to victims of domestic violence,” Stack said. “With a phone call, letter or e-mail, victims can better prepare themselves and take action to ensure their safety.

“Unfortunately, we also live in a city that is seeing increasing violence on our streets. Crime witnesses and their families fear retaliation for their testimony in court,” Stack said. “By receiving this notification, individuals can further protect themselves from criminals.”

Stack added, “This system will benefit victims and the entire community, who can prepare themselves in the event of an attempted repeat offense.”

The system will be implemented in Philadelphia this summer, possibly as early as June, and will gradually go statewide.

Appriss Inc. runs the automated system. For more information, visit www.vinelink.com
