HARRISBURG, July 2, 2006 – State Sen. Michael J. Stack
(D-Philadelphia) released the following statement responding to
passage of the 2006-2007 state budget:
“This budget’s emphasis on public education will help create a
new generation of workers, thinkers, and leaders that can
compete in the global marketplace. The city of Philadelphia will
receive additional funds to boost student achievement.
Pennsylvania’s community colleges and state system schools will
be getting a 5 percent increase in funding. With this budget,
parents will be able to deduct contributions to their children’s
tuition savings accounts for the first time. Also, this budget
will boost funding for our state’s public libraries, which
desperately need assistance. Public libraries will receive $14.1
million in state funding.
“Our children will be well-served by another centerpiece of this
budget – the Cover All Kids program, which aims to guarantee
that every child in Pennsylvania has health insurance. The
governor anticipates providing health insurance to 15,000
children through this budget. This proposal is a great
demonstration of our commitment to the children of our
commonwealth.
“The World Trade PA initiative in this year’s budget is another
creative program that will move our state forward. Pennsylvania
is home to many small and medium-sized businesses that could
grow if they had assistance with reaching into the global
marketplace. World Trade PA will give these businesses the
contacts and expertise they need, growing those companies and
improving Philadelphia’s status as an export hub.”
