HARRISBURG, January 12, 2006 - In-ground storage tanks,
which are widely used in Japan, are a safer alternative to the
safety challenged liquefied natural gas terminal proposed by
Philadelphia Gas Works, according to State Sen. Mike Stack and
State Rep. Mike McGeehan.
“Proponents of LNG, such as PGW, often emphasize how safely it
has been used and transported around the world,” said Stack
(D-Philadelphia). “In addition to providing scant details to
back up their claims, they fail to talk about measures to
protect the public, such as in-ground storage tanks.”
“Underground storage tanks provide a natural defense against
terrorist attacks,” said McGeehan. “During the LNG debate, our
top priority is the safety of citizens, businesses, and first
responders. PGW’s proposed LNG facility has not gained public
support, and likely will not gain any public support since they
continue to ignore public safety.”
In-ground storage tanks are difficult targets for terrorists,
and they have been characterized as environmentally sound. There
are 76 in-ground LNG terminals in Japan.
