Stack: Financial Aid Applications Deadline Approaching

PHILADELPHIA, APRIL 22, 2010 - State Sen. Mike Stack reminds Pennsylvania families that the deadline for most college-bound students to file for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming school year is May 1.

“Financial aid makes higher education possible for many students,” Stack said. “Many families are struggling in today’s troubled economy, so it’s important to apply for financial aid now.”

The FAFSA is used to determine if students qualify for almost all forms of need-based financial aid, including the Pennsylvania State Grant, federal Pell Grant, many scholarships and institutional awards and low-cost student loans.

More than 170,000 Pennsylvania students received a state grant in the 2009-10 school year. The Pennsylvania State Grant program is administered by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).

Families can access the 2010-11 FAFSA and seek assistance completing the FAFSA online by visiting the senator’s Web site at www.senatorstack.com and clicking the “Plan for College” link.
