Stack Joins Rhawnhurst Students for 'Read Across America'
PHILADELPHIA, MARCH 9, 2009 — State Sen. Mike Stack recently joined local students to celebrate Read Across America.
The senator was a guest reader at Natalie Franklin’s fifth-grade class at Rhawnhurst Elementary School on March 6, where he promoted literacy and read to the students.
“It was a pleasure to read to the fifth graders,” Stack said. “As an avid reader, I enjoyed sharing my love of reading with the students and I hope they learned that reading is an experience that children and adults alike can share.”
Read Across America is a nationwide celebration that centers around the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.
Stack read Grandfather’s Journey by Allen Say, an account of Say’s grandfather’s experiences emigrating from Japan to the United States.
“This is a story about a man who struggles with feelings of identity and belonging, and I think the fifth-graders can relate to that theme as they discover who they are,” Stack said. “There are so many wonderful non-fiction stories geared toward children, so I hope the students will take time to go to the library or a bookstore and seek out true stories and learn important lessons from the stories they read.”
