Stack: Stimulus Funds to Benefit I-95 Traffic in the Far Northeast
PHILADELPHIA, JUNE 19, 2009 — A stretch of Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia will receive a boost from federal stimulus funding, according to state Sen. Mike Stack.
The $21.7 million in federal funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) will go toward the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Intelligent Transportation System project to improve motorists’ safety.
Thanks to the federal stimulus, this project will help PennDOT identify an incident on the highway quickly, so that it can respond immediately and reduce traffic congestion and danger. This project will also put Pennsylvanians to work, which helps our economy,” Stack said. “I’m so pleased to see federal stimulus money going directly to helping motorists who drive in and pass through Northeast Philadelphia.”
Specifically, the project involves installing 17 new closed circuit television cameras, 10 dynamic message signs, 54 travel time readers and 40 incident detectors and upgrading 14 existing closed circuit television cameras and four existing message signs on I-95 between Academy Road and Route 1 in Northeast Philadelphia and Bucks County.
These devices will also be installed on I-95 between Broad Street and I-676 and on I-676 between I-76 and I-95.
